* 1876 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad reaches Pueblo, Colorado.
* 1892 – Japan's Mito Railway is consolidated into the Japanese National Railways.
* 1893 – The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (the New Haven Railroad) leases the Old Colony Railroad.

20th century

* 1920 – Control of American railroads is returned to private ownership and administration with the disbandment of the USRA.
* 1989 – The Abbeville-Grimes Railway (a predecessor of the Bay Line Railroad) begins operations between its namesake cities in Alabama.
* 1995 – CP Rail announces that Robert J. Ritchie will succeed I. Barry Scott as president and CEO of CP Rail.

* 1816 – John Souther, founder of Globe Locomotive Works (d. 1911).
* 1955 – Peter Zars, the first on-train birth aboard the "California Zephyr" passenger train (while the train passed through Ruby Canyon).
