Mabe, Cornwall

Mabe is a village and civil parish in the Kerrier district of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.

The civil parish is bounded by Stithians and St. Gluvias to the north, Budock to the east, Mawnan and Constantine to the south and Wendron to the west.

The village of Mabe Burnthouse is on a hill, overlooking Penryn to its east.Another settlement called Mabe Church is to the South West and includes the Church, dedicated to Saint Laudus, Bishop of Coutances.

The 15th Century tower and porch [Pevsner,N. "Buildings of England:Cornwall' (1951;1970) (rev. Enid Radclffe) ISBN 0-300-09589-9 . Page 110] survived a lightning strike. The remainder of the church was re-built from 1866, under the direction of Piers St. AubynCharles G. Henderson "Mabe church and parish", Long Compton, The King's Stone Press, 1930.] . In the churchyard, there is an ancient menhir and a celtic cross. The latter was found in the vicarage and installed near the porch, at some time between 1919 and 1930.

The parish lies at the eastern edge of the Carnmenellis Granite intrusion [ [http://jgslegacy.lyellcollection.org/cgi/content/abstract/90/1-4/240 Article on Carnmenellis Granite] ] . It is surrounded by several working and closed quarries.

The Argal and College reservoirs lie to the south of the village.A Community Primary School with 110 pupils serves the area [ [http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/portal/site/Internet/menuitem.7c7b38b14d870c7bb1890a01637046a0/?urn=111855&providerCategoryID=4096 Ofsted information and access to report] ] . Near the Antron Hill cross-roads, there is a pub, "The New Inn" and a Post Office General Stores.

Sam Toy, former chairman of Ford of Britain was born here, as was Roger Hosen, the Cornwall and England rugby player.

A "Steam Up and Shindig" Festival is held in May each year.
