The Liberal Party of Honduras "(Partido Liberal de Honduras)" is a liberal party in
Honduras that was founded in1891 . The party is a member ofLiberal International . The PLH is identified with the color red while its principal rival, theNational Party of Honduras (PNH), is blue.All the democratic elections in Honduras have been between the PLH and the PNH. The PLH won the closely contested 2005 presidential race, but at the moment the PNH has a majority in the National Congress due to an alliance with the Christian Democrats "(Democracia Cristiana)."
At the legislative elections, held on
25 November 2001 , the party won 40.8% of the popular vote and 55 out of 128 seats in Congress. Its candidate at the presidential elections,Rafael Pineda Ponce won 44.3%, but was defeated byRicardo Maduro of theNational Party of Honduras .The Liberal Party's candidate in the presidential election of
November 27 ,2005 wasManuel Zelaya , pitted against the PNH'sPorfirio Pepe Lobo . Zelaya won, restoring the PLH as the presidential party onJanuary 27 ,2006 .In the legislative elections of
27 November 2005 , the party won 62 out of 128 seats in the Congress. Its candidate at the presidential elections, José Manuel Zelaya Rosales won 49.9% and was elected president.ee also
