Ponta João Ribeiro (in
Cape Verdean Creole , written inALUPEC : "Pónta Jon R’ber") is a cape located in the island of São Vicente nearly 3 km north of the island capital ofMindelo . The point is accessed with an earthened road that link withMindelo . The cape divides theCanal de São Vicente and theMindelo Bay , the nearby islet ofIlhéu dos Pássaros is approximately 600 to 800 m to the west-southwest. The line is from southeast to northwest.Geography and Information
The cape's soil colour are light brown, tan red and rarely brown and is made up of rocky ledges that are treacherous and elevated up to around 100 m in height. The mountains surround the cape and features a lighthouse. Bushes are a trace in the area and are unsuitabel for vegetation due to the dry climate.
Near the cape is an abandoned military camp used by the Portuguese during the Portuguese rule until
1975 and has several buildings that are now a monument. The monument also features an old cannon.Panorama
The promontory offers a panoramic view of the island of Santo Antão and the
Atlantic Ocean , it also offers breathtaking views of around the cape, much of the city ofMindelo as well as the town ofLazareto , the hills and the mountains of the central and the southern parts of the island including Caixa, the island's widest valley, Monte Cara and its mountain ranges andIlhéu dos Pássaros to the west.Nearby places
