Hindi for Central School) is a system of Central government schools for children of employees ofIndia 's central government. The system came into being in 1965 and has been affiliated toCBSE since then. Initially called Central School, it was started mainly to cater to the children of people in the defence services who were often posted to remote places. With the army starting its ownArmy Public School s, the service was extended (but not restricted to) to all central government employees. The uniform curriculum followed all over India for ensuring that children of government employees do not face educational difficulties when the parents are transferred. The name change from "Central School" to "Kendriya Vidyalaya" was a part of the drive to make it more IndianFact|date=January 2008. The drive also lead to a lot of the syllabus becoming more Sanskrit and pure Hindi based, with options for students to take Social Studies in Hindi or EnglishFact|date=January 2008. The Sanskrit prayers and higher level of Hindi curriculum was a part of the same drive which included the change of names in official titles such as Syndicate becoming Sangathan.
There are at least 929 Kendriya Vidyalayas at present including 4 outside India. These have been divided amongst 21 regions each headed by an Assistant Commissioner.A body known as the "Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan" (Central School Organization) oversees the schools.
Kendriya Vidyalayas are noted for promoting egalitarian values among children of various socio-economic backgrounds.

"India is my country and all Indians are my brothers and sisters. I love my country and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage. I shall always strive to be worthy of it. I shall give respect to my parents, teachers and elders and treat everyone with courtesy. To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion. In their well being and prosperity alone, lies my happiness. Jai Hind!"
In
"Schools Outside India
There are 4 K. V. schools outside India in
Kathmandu ,Moscow ,Tehran andKuwait . These are intended for children of Indian Embassy staff and other expatriate Indian central government employeesApplause
As a result of the admission process, Kendriya Vidyalayashave students from various parts of the country and from various backgrounds.
K.V.s emphasise the importance of patriotism and social awareness. Students are given the opportunity to grow in a language, region, religion, and culture-neutral environment, so that they can beaware of the country's multicultural ethos.
The uniformity of syllabus and pattern of teaching is a great help to children of parents who get transferred frequently. The K.V.s have been a great boon specially to the Armed Forces families and the central government employees making it possible for there children to get uniform education throughout the country without breaks due to frequent transfers
Criticisms
As the education is largely subsidized by the Central Government at the Indian taxpayer's expense, many private schools affiliated to the C.B.S.E. and the
Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations indirectly complain of unfair advantage to its students when compared to theirs in Indianstandardized tests Fact|date=January 2008.Additionally,
corporal punishment , widely believed to have disappeared in KVs and other government and government-aided schools in India since the Supreme Court declaration several years ago, is still quite prevalent. Also, a strong (undesirable) emphasis is put on history,.Fact|date=July 2007See also
