Pronunciation = The Nilgiri (Tamil : நீலகிரி or literally: Blue Mountains), often referred to as the Nilgiri Hills, are a range of mountains with at least 24 peaks above 2,000 meters, in the westernmost part ofTamil Nadu at the junction ofKarnataka andKerala inSouthern India . They are part of the largerWestern Ghats mountain chain making up the western edge of theDeccan Plateau . The hills are separated from the Karnataka plateau to the north by theNoyar River and from theAnaimalai Hills andPalni Hills to the south by thePalghat Gap . Hecuba (height: convert|2375|m|ft|0|lk=on), Kattadadu (height: convert|2418|m|ft|0|lk=on) and Kulkudi (height: convert|2439|m|ft|0|lk=on) are closely linked peaks in the west of Doddabetta range and nearby Udhagamandalam. Snowdon (height: (convert|2530|m|ft|0|lk=on) coord|11|26|N|76|46|E|region:IN_type:mountain|name=Snowdon is the northern extent of the range. Club Hill (height: convert|2448|m|ft|0|lk=on) and Elk Hill (height: convert|2466|m|ft|0|lk=on) are significant elevations in this range. The Sanskrit name of his place is "Bakasura Parvata". It is 3 km. south east ofCoonoor . It is on the northern side of the gorge, accommodating the

On the Nilgiri Plateau, the Kundah range of the Nilgiri hills is a ridge on the south-western side of Mukurthi National Park bordering
Kerala . With elevations greater than the general level of the plateau, the range possesses some peaks close to the height of Doddabetta.Avalanche hill of this range has twin-peaks of the Kudikkadu (height: convert|2590|m|ft|0|lk=on) and the Kolaribetta (height: convert|2625|m|ft|0|lk=on). Derbetta (or Bear Hill) (height: convert|2531|m|ft|0|lk=on) and Kolibetta (height: convert|2494|m|ft|0|lk=on), south of the Ouchterlony valley, are a continuation of the Kundah range.
Pichalbetta (height: convert|2544|m|ft|0|lk=on), Nilgiri Peak (height: convert|2474|m|ft|0|lk=on) and Mukurthi Peak (height: 2554 M.convert|2554|m|ft|0|lk=on) are the important heights of this area. These 3 hills of the
Wynaad District are generally low in relation to other heights of the district; but are distinguished in relation to the generally uniform level of this area. Over 2700 species of flowering plants, 160 species of fern and fern allies, countless types of flowerless plants, mosses, fungi, algae, land lichens are found in the sholas of the Nilgiris. No other Hill station has so many exotic species. The Nilgiri hills can be reached by the
Nilgiri Mountain Railway and by motor vehicle over five separateNilgiri Ghat Roads .A good way to enjoy the beauty of the Nilgiris is to
trek its slopes. Some of the trekking routes are:
