Templeton is a town 15 km southwest of Christchurch on State Highway 1. It has been the centre of harness racing in Canterbury with many famous names such as Devine, Nyan, Butt, Jones and Carmichael among its people.

Its European history goes back over 140 years when it was a watering point for horses between Christchurch and the Selwyn River.

Templeton hospital has had a major impact on the area, providing employment and controversy over many years.

More recently Ruapuna Park has created public debate regarding acceptable noise levels for residents near motor-sports venues.

In 2007, Dave Leonard was elected President for Life of the small and perfectly formed suburb.
