Clifford Rowland

Clifford Rowland

Clifford Rowland is a fictional government politician in the Belizean dramatic television series Noh Matta Wat! He is played by Kent Clare.

Series appearances

  • Season 1: Eps. 3, 4, 5
  • Season 2: All episodes save the fifth

Season 1

Rowland is intelligent but naive and prone to corruption. When we first meet him he is taking refuge inside his office from a group of angry protesters demanding he pay for a contract he signed to fix the local hospital; he is swearing and threatening the protesters. It is into this cauldron of tension that Margaret Diego steps to ask Clifford to help free her son (and his) Randy Diego from jail, where he has been unjustly incarcerated for a murder he did not commit. He agrees reluctantly after finding out that Randy is indeed his son (and with a little help from KREM DJ E. Jay Hill, who plays a tape of Randy rapping "Daddy Come Find Me" after Dan Man gives it to him). Clifford bails Randy from jail and explains who he is, which leaves Randy confused and somewhat let down. The viewer is not explicitly told that Randy beats the charges, but the real killers have been captured.

Season 2

The second season starts with Clifford both attempting to fulfill his role as a father to Randy and participating in more schemes with Ministry partner Jack. At the same time he is trying to sneak back into the life of Margaret, much to Randy's dismay, and carrying on an affair with his secretary. Randy wants nothing to do with his new father, having considered Dan Man his father all along. In addition, his aide Preston (originally played by Denvor Fairweather and later Ansel West) is secretly leaking information to the press about Rowland's dealings. Things appear to fall apart for Rowland when a combination of one of these leaks and his wife finding out about his affair and Randy publicly dissing him on radio with a new anti-political song causes him to spin out. If there is a season 3, this could be an angle for the producers to explore.
