Melaka General Hospital

Melaka General Hospital or Hospital Besar Melaka is a government-funded public hospital situated in the state of Melaka, Malaysia. It is a tertiary and specialist hospital and serves as a referral centre for patients from primary and secondary health centres in the state.

Location

Melaka Hospital is located at the northern part of Melaka which is about 15 minutes drive from town.It is addressed at Jalan Peringgit , Melaka.The hospital area covers a land estimated 17.4 acres with hospital buildings and well equipped facilities and infrastructure.The land is at the moment in the process of widening for the hospital is planning in opening a few more buildings.

History

Melaka General Hospital was opened in 1934 with a sum of RM2.34 million. It was officiated by Sir Cecil Clementi on 12 February 1934. The grand opening was also attended by the Colonial Secretary , Mr.A.Caldecott , Commander Officer , Major General Lewin , Director of Medical Treatment and Health , Dr.R.D.Fitzgerald , Resident Counselor , Mr.M.W.Millington and many other celebrities including 700 other people of Melaka.

In the openin g speech by Dr.R.D.Fitzgerald , it was said that Melaka Hospital is the most up to date in medical facilities as follows;"…..this beautiful building on this hill for centuries will be a vision of excellency in the medical field not only in Melaka but also in Tanah Melayu. I hope that the people of Melaka will be satisfied considering what they have now is the first step to other benefits in future medical services."

Infrastructure and Facilities

Melaka GH is fully equipped in medical facilities and infrastructure since it was first opened in 1934. It has 4 blocks of wards consisting 806 beds and 17 wards. Other basic necessities including the telephone , ATM tellermachine , vending machines and many others are in easy reach in the hospital. There are also cafeteria , mosque and waiting rooms provided. It also has a very nice environment with beautiful landscapes gardens for the comfort of patients and visitors.

Due to its location, Melaka GH receives referrals from all peripheral clinics and hospitals in Melaka, and even from neighbouring states such as Johor (Tangkak, Muar) and Negeri Sembilan (Tampin). This makes it a very busy hospital with an ever increasing workload. Bed occupancy rates in some wards even exceed 100% at times.

Medical Education and Services

Melaka Manipal Medical College

Melaka GH serves as one of the two main teaching hospitals for medical students of Melaka Manipal Medical College, the other being Muar General Hospital. The college itself is situated at walking distance from the hospital.

Malacca Midwifery School

This school was built on 1st February 1982. Its purpose is to give midwifery course to the nurse from the Ministry of Health, Corporate and Defence sectors. Theoritical and practical sessions are conducted from this school.

Malacca Nursing School

The Malacca Hospital Nursing provides basic training of nurses from all over Malaysia. Incorporated in the training are theoritical as well as practical experiences in the Malacca Hospital. A 3-year training programme will cover all aspects of nursing care. Upon completion, the nurses are posted to hospitals all over the country. The nursing school is well-equipped with all training facilities and complimented by dedicated nursing tutors. It is an accredited nursing training institution for Malaysia.

Chest Clinic

The Chest Clinic is the registration center for all tuberculosis cases in Malacca. It keeps all records on every tuberculosis patient in Malacca. This clinic provides health education to all tuberculosis patients, tuberculosis contacts and their families. The Chest Clinic also manages all the treatments and outpatient services on tuberculosis including appointments and revisions. It also provides anti tuberculosis medicines and tuberculosis program cards to all medical centers and wards. This clinic is the referral center on specialist services. It also has a special lab to examine sputum examples and AFB Culture Research.
