Melaka Manipal Medical College is a Malaysian private medical college which offers 2 twinning undergraduate degrees, the Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and also the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. It is the only college to offer a twinning medical degree programme between Malaysia and India.[citation needed]

Students undergo 2.5 years of basic sciences and introductory clinical training in the Manipal Campus in Karnataka state of India and later another 2.5 years follow-up with further medical education and clinical training at the Malacca Campus in Malaysia.

It is a constituent college of Manipal University (formerly known as Manipal Academy of Higher Education or MAHE), the first and largest private university in India till date.[citation needed] Its medical colleges consistently rank in the top 10 in India.[citation needed]

History

Malacca Manipal Medical College (MMMC) started its first admission of students in September 1997. Its founding chairman was Datuk K. Pathmanaban, who is former Deputy Health Minister of Malaysia and was instrumental in the setting up of the college.

The creation of the medical college was an outcome between an agreement between the governments of Malaysia and India. Malaysia has a long history of having many of its doctors being trained in India. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between JVMC Corporation Sdn Bhd and Manipal University for the creation of the college. JVMC Corporation will provide the facilities, infrastructure and management needed for the running of the college while Manipal University will provide administrative, syllabus and teaching support for the programme in both Manipal and Malacca. The MoU was signed in the presence of His Excellency Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammed, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Honorable Shri P. V. Recognition

The medical degree which is conferred by Manipal University is recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and the Malaysian Government. The degree is also accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Malacca Manipal Medical College is also enlisted in IMED and FAIMER, hence making the students eligible to sit for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination).

Campuses

Malacca Manipal Medical College has two campuses situated in two countries where teaching is carried under the twinning programme.

The Manipal campus in Karnataka, India, is also known as the International Centre for Health Sciences (ICHS), where the basic sciences of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine as well as introductory clinical practicals are taught. The Manipal campus is headed by Dean Dr Ullas Kamath.

The Malacca campus in Malaysia is where further medical education and clinical training in subjects such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Community Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Family Medicine, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry. It is headed by Dean Dr. Jashpal Singh.

Students

MMMC hosts students from many countries around the globe. But the majority of students are still made up of Malaysians.

  • In Manipal, each student is assigned to a lecturer as a guardian and to ease the transition into academic life at the university campus.

Trivia

In October 2003, one of the college's medical graduate Dr.E Rathakrishnan was recognised by the Malaysia Books of Records as the oldest medical graduate in Malaysia. He completed his medical training at the age of 63 and had completed 1 year of internship.[citation needed]
