Alice Rose Bates was a fictional character on ITV's "Emmerdale" from 1991-1999, 2001. She was played by two actresses: Kimberley Hewitt from 1991-1993 and by Rachel Tolboys since 1993.

Alice was born in February 1991 to Nick Bates Elsa Feldmann. Elsa left when Alice was a baby and so Alice was raised by her Father Nick for most of her early life. Her mother did still live in Emmerdale but not with Nick and Alice.

In 1993, a plane crashed in the Village. Alice's dad Nick was out with his friend Archie Brooks who was also Alice's live in Child minder and so Alice was being looked after by a babysitter. The baby sitter left Alice alone for a bit, just before the plane came down. Archie was killed but Nick survived. Alice was feared dead but a few days later she was pulled out of the rubble of what had been her home.

In 1994, Nick spent several weeks in hospital after the plane crash. Alice went to stay with Elsa, who tried to make this a permanent arrangement by spreading the rumor that Nick and Archie had been gay lovers and exaggerating situations where Alice was endangered. The court didn't agree and custody was awarded to Nick. Elsa secretly went to live in Australia a short time after this.

In 1996 Alice's father Nick went to prison for accidentally shooting a poacher. He got 10 years. Her mother Elsa lived in Australia, so Alice spent most of her early life being brought up by her aunt Kathy.

However, later on in 1996, Kathy and Alice started being threatened by the family of the man Nick had killed. Kathy and Nick's mother caroline came to emmerdale from scarbourgh and wanted to take Alice back with her. However KAthy was determined to fuflil Nick's wishes of having Alice with her.

Alice was upset when Kathy got back together with Dave Glover as he had left them once before. He did leave them but in the worst possible way. He died whilst saving Kim Tate's son James Tate from a fire.

In 1997, when Nick's sentence was revealed, Kathy was pleased as well as upset because it meant she could keep Alice. However Nick's girlfriend Karen went to see Alice after school and took her back to the village. Alice was reluctant to go with her as she didn't know her. When Kathy found out she was furious and ordered Karen to keep away from Alice.

In 2000, she went to live with her Mum in Australia. However later on in 2000, Kathy went to visit Alice. She didn't like what she saw and kidnapped her back. They stayed in the village for a few months before Elsa turned up wanting Alice back. Alice went back to Australia.

At the end of 2001, Alice came to visit for a few months. Kathy enjoyed having her around so much that she decided to leave Emmerdale and return to Australia with Alice.

Alice has been mentioned a few times since leaving Emmerdale.
