St. Columban is a community located in
Southwestern Ontario ,Canada in the municipalities of West Perth andHuron East, Ontario .Originally called Irishtown, it was renamed after the irish saint. Soccer has been a large part of St. Columban with close to 300 kids playing on the soccer fields behind the church. The Catholic church in the area was established in 1832 and was closed in June 2005 and torn down in June 2006. St. Columban RC Church was the first church in the area. The community held their first masses in the local tavern and later built a log cabin church and later built a large French white brick church which burnt to the ground one night in July 1909, the parish worked together and built the red brick church in 1911 which remained on the site for 95 years. The community is nearby the location whereJohn Labatt spent one night during his kidnapping.
