History

St. Lawrence's economy was primarily based on fishing until the recent collapse of North American cod stock. The government of Canada has implemented a morotorium on cod fishing. A Fluorspar mine in St. Lawrence was once a major employer in the community until 1978, when Alcan closed the mine. A recent wind project has been announced by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for St. Lawrence. The project will result in the installation of 14, 1.8MW turbines.

U.S.S Pollux and U.S.S Truxtun

On February 18, 1942, more than two hundred American sailors died when the U.S.S. Pollux and U.S.S Truxton ran around in Chamber Cove.
