Saint Vincent Academy

Saint Vincent Academy

Saint Vincent Academy (SVA), is a four-year, Catholic, college preparatory school for young women located on West Market Street in Newark, New Jersey, United States. It is located within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.

Background

The academy was founded in 1869 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, and named for St. Vincent de Paul. Saint Vincent Academy currently holds the distinction of being the only private high school for women in the city of Newark. The current administrative team consists of Sister June Favata, S.C., Sr. Margaret Killough, S.C., and Ms. Mary F. Nolan. This school has one of the highest graduation rates of other schools in Newark and Essex County. Its strategic programs such as the Freshwomen program and the Students in Community Program make it a true diamond in the rough. The girls who go there form strong bonds with their sisters and are able to reach out and help other people in their communities. The students also develop a sense of pride and empowerment in being women while learning of the necessity of people who are dedicated to changing the world for the better. cite web|url=http://www.svanewark.org/about_us.cfm|title=Saint Vincent Academy-About Us|accessdate=2007-05-11|publisher=Saint Vincent Academy website|author=SVA]
