Javarris James (born in Immokalee, Florida) is a college football running back at the University of Miami. [http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/Camper/PHOTO/JAVARRISJAMESNIKE1150.jpg] Nicknamed "Baby J" [http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/colleges/um/story/193914.html] , James is the cousin of NFL running back Edgerrin James of the Arizona Cardinals, who also played for the University of Miami. Edgerrin and Javarris both have worn the number 5 at Miami.

High school

Hailing from Immokalee, Florida, Javarris was one of the highest rated running backs during the 2005-06 recruiting season.Fact|date=August 2007 As a sophomore, James rushed 165 times for 1,145 yards and 14 touchdowns for Immokalee High School. He developed further as a junior, rushing 225 times for 1,658 yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the Indians to the state title. He suffered a knee injury during his senior year that kept him out of five games, but he returned to the lineup and still rushed for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns.

In a regional semifinal game in December 2005, James had a spectacular performance against the visiting Belen Wolverines of South West Miami, running for 300 yards on a 20 carries along with 3 touchdowns. The last touchdown was an untouched 87 yard run, his final carry of the contest, to seal the win late in the 4th quarter. In a postgame interview he was quoted as saying that his offensive line confided with him before the game that they were going to spring him for 300.Fact|date=August 2007

University of Miami

He was heavily recruited by Miami, USC, Florida, South Florida, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. James chose to follow in the footsteps of his cousin and play for Miami, where he dons the same #5 jersey his cousin wore during his days at Miami.

James impressed Miami head coach Larry Coker during fall practice to the point that Coker did not hesitate to use the true freshman in the first game of the 2006 season against archrival Florida State. After games against Florida A&M and Louisville, Coker named James the starting running by the fourth game of the season. James responded by rushing for 148 yards on 18 carries, an 8.2 yards per carry average, and a touchdown in his first college start against Houston. The 148 yards were a school record for a freshman, topping Clinton Portis's old mark of 147 yards. In recognition of his accomplishment, James was named the ACC Rookie of the Week. [http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/100306aad.html] James broke the 100-yard barrier again in his next start, as he ran for 111 yards and a touchdown against North Carolina. James surpassed the "century mark" the third time in Miami's October 28 loss to Georgia Tech, rushing for 112 yards on 19 carries. James suffered a hip pointer injury early in the first half of Miami's November 7 game against Virginia Tech. He finished his freshman season with 175 rushing attempts for 802 yards and 4 touchdowns. He caught one receiving touchdown against Florida A&M along with 200 total receiving yards over the course of the season. The play of the talented freshman was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing 2006 season for Miami.

As a Sophomore James was bothered by an ankle and neck injury all season long but he still managed to rush 159 times for 582 yards and 4 touchdowns, and he caught 14 passes for 100 yards over his sophomore season.
