The college educates around 750 girls from year 7 to VCE. The current principal is Karen Jebb.
The school is run by the RC Sisters of Sion, a religious order committed to improving Jewish-Christian relations.
Contents
History
The College was founded in 1928 by the Sisters of the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion with 15 students. MM John was the first Director/Principal who led the new school through the financial difficulties of the Depression.
Enrolment continued to grow and by 1958 there were 238 girls studying at the College. Now over 750 students are taught and supported by almost 100 staff members. It is located in Box Hill, adjacent to St Francis Xavier Primary School.
In 2002 the current black and green school uniform was introduced to replace the previous pink, cherry and brown.
Houses
Our Lady of Sion has four houses, each named after a place where the Virgin Mary appeared. The houses and their colours are:[1]
- Carmel (gold)
- Lourdes (blue)
- Fatima (red)
- Loreto (green)
Curriculum
All students in Years 7 and 8 take compulsory studies including Religious Education, English, French, Italian and Chinese, Health and Physical Education, Maths, Science, Creative Arts and Technology. Middle school students study a core curriculum, which is supplemented by an inter-disciplinary program, which concentrates on innovative teaching and learning. The Ayin Program allows students to develop skills in problem solving, cooperative learning and independent research while working towards the attainment of learning outcomes.
At VCE level, students are able to choose from a broad range of studies enabling them to construct programs in Humanities, Arts, Mathematics and Science, Technology and Business areas. Students may also enrol in VET programs (linked in particular to the Hospitality, Clothing and Design and Architecture industries) as part of their VCE.
