Yeogang High School (Korean: 여강고등학교, Hanja: 麗江高等學校) and Yeogang Middle School (Korean: 여강중학교, Hanja: 麗江中學敎) are private-dependent, co-educational schools located in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, approximately one hour southeast of Seoul. The schools promote intellectual curiosity, disciplined study habits, and a goal oriented work ethic. Ninety percent of the class of 2008 entered university study.

The high school serves grades 10-12, while the middle school serves grades 7-9. Yeogang offers students the choice of a comprehensive or vocational education. The former program prepares students for general university study, whereas the latter program prepares students for business and management university study or immediate employment in industry.

History and Philosophy

Established as Yeogang Junior High School in 1970 under the endowment of Yi-bae Kim, an agricultural entrepreneur and landowner, it was incorporated three years later into the newly built high school and renamed the Yeogang Middle School.

For much of its history the high school was known as the Yeogang Consolidated High School, but in 2003 was renamed to commemorate the founder's vision of plurality in education.

As with other Korean schools, Yeogang's philosophies root in Eastern thought: patriotism, filial piety, harmony with nature, and value as a social sense. Teachers aim to cultivate students with a breadth of abilities. Moreover, the school's principles hark back to the area's famous residents: King Sejong the Great [(King Sejong's tomb was moved to Yeoju from Seoul in 1469.) Nilsen, R. (2004). Moon Handbooks South Korea, 3rd eds. Avalon Travel Publishing. ] (1397-1450), Empress Myeongseong ["Birthplace of Empress Myeongseong". (2004). County of Yeoju Website. 28 October 2006 http://yj21.net/eng/tour/remain_04.asp] (1851-1895); Silleuksa, and the southern reach of the river Han, its most notable waterway.

tudent Body

Four hundred and eighty-one students are enrolled at the Yeogang schools: 339 at the high school and 142 at the middle school. Sixty six percent of the high school student body is on the general track. In the graduating class of 2008, 98 percent of the general track and 75 percent of the business track graduates entered university.

chool seals

The school moniker, in two three-stroke diamond inscribed blocks, consists of "yeo gang", or "bristle river". The name comes from the way local waterways sinuate like horse bristles during the wet season. The red badge symbolizes a strong will to study, the blue badge large dreams.
