About Seymour High School

Seymour High School serves students from grades 9-12. Seymour High School serves students from Seymour, and a percentage of students from Oxford. Many of Oxford 12th grade students go to Seymour High School, because their high school is not yet completed. However, OHS opened in the fall of 2007, so students graduating in the year 2010 have transferred there. This is the only high school in Seymour.

Seymour built its first public High School in 1884 on Bank Street. It was on a two acre piece of property that the town purchased for $3,000 in June 1884. When the school opened in the Fall of 1886, there were 456 students in nine rooms. Later, the building was used as an elementary school known as Center School.

In 1915 Seymour purchased land in the Pine Street area (near Broad Street area) and by 1916 a new high school opened. In the 1960s the Pine Street school was converted to a middle school and a new high school was opened on Botsford Road. [Seymour, CT [] ]

According to the school's strategic profile a $21.9 million building project was completed on the high school in the summer and fall of 2005. This renovation included an addition of a modern and up to date science wing as well as an addition to the main office and guidance department. The cafeteria and libraries were both remodeled, and moved to new positions.

The facilities at Seymour High School include a large auditorium and stage, a gymnasium that doubles as a basketball and volleyball court, a weight lifting gym, and six locker rooms (for swimming; boys and girls, for football/soccer; boys and girls, and two for weight lifting). Other sports facilities include a pool, an outdoor track, and a football field which doubles as a soccer field. The boy's baseball teams also uses French Park in Seymour.
