stratovolcano located in theAndes , on the border ofOsorno Province andRanco Province , southernChile . It is surrounded by a volcanic sand plateau, with fumaroles and hot springs. The name comes fromMapudungun language: "puye" = a creek fish, "hue" = place.Puyehue volcano was constructed above a 5-km-wide caldera and is capped by a 2.4-km-wide summit caldera of Holocene age. Lava flows and domes of mostly rhyolitic composition are found on the eastern flank. Historical eruptions originally attributed to Puyehue, including major eruptions in 1921-22 and 1960, are now known to be from the
Cordón Caulle rift zone.Approach
From the south, the plateau can be approached from El Caulle on Ruta 215, which goes from Osorno to the border with Argentina. Ascend ca 1,000 m on forested slope to the plateau, where there is a popular campsite and refugio. From the north, there is a trail from Riñinahue near Lago Ranco. It ascends ca 1,000 m through dense forest to the plateau.
There is further ca 600 m of ascent over sand and loose rocks to the summit.
