Black Emperor andShalabi Effect .About the band
The band was formed in 1996 by
guitar ists Jonathan Parant and Roger Tellier-Craig,drummer Felix Morel, and bassist Jean-Sebastian Truchy. Eric Gingras would later on join the band in 2002, contributing guitar and percussion. They shared personnel with
Godspeed You! Black Emperor until guitarist Roger Tellier-Craig left Godspeed You! Black Emperor in 2003 to concentrate full time on Fly Pan Am. The band are currently on a long term hiatus and it is not known when, or if, they will regroup. The band is noticeably influenced by the
French Canadian culture ofQuebec , as well as the burgeoningavant-garde musical scene inMontreal . French is the predominant language used in producing albums and writing lyrics, with English peppered throughout. The track titles on past records, as stated by Roger Tellier-Craig, were written in a way to interpret the song, which Tellier-Craig concedes was "lost on most listeners" due to the French used.Cite web|url=http://www.southern.net/southern/news/?id=24|title=Interview with Roger Tellier-Craig of Fly Pan Am|accessdate=2007-03-27|publisher=Southern Records|year=2004|author=Powell, Mark|work=Interviews] Unorthodox use of electronic sounds, occasionally provided by Alexandre St-Onge, serve to intersect and often confuse the listener.Cite web|url=http://www.cstrecords.com/cst019.html|title=Le Fly Pan Am – "Ceux qui inventent n'ont jamais vécu (?)"|accessdate=2007-03-27|publisher=Constellation Records|year=2006|author=Constellation Records|work=Records index|format=html]The group often records their albums at the
Hotel2Tango , arecording studio owned byEfrim Menuck andThierry Amar of Godspeed You! Black Emperor fame, as well asHoward Bilerman . As a result of these ties, members of otherMontreal -based bands sometimes participate as guest musicians or aid the recording process. An announcement from the band in 2006 spoke of their indefinite hiatus and Jonathan Parant's part in
Feu Thérèse .fact|date=March 2007 Felix currently drums for the psychedelic sludge band Panopticon Eyelids and for Les Enfants Sauvages.fact|date=March 2007 No other information about the other band members' current musical endeavors has been provided.Discography
