In theSouth Island , a long and mostly straight coastline is broken by twopeninsula s,Banks Peninsula and theOtago Peninsula . As with Australia, surfing and game fishing are major tourist attractions, whilewhale watching is a popular attraction atKaikoura .Geology
The
geology of the coast around the Pacific is dominated by thePacific Ring of Fire , a ring of volcanic and seismic activity that encircles the ocean. Active and dormant volcanoes exist in manyPacific Rim countries, such asMount St. Helens in theUnited States ,Mount Ruapehu inNew Zealand ,Mount Erebus in Antarctica, andMount Pinatubo in the Philippines. This ring is also noted for earthquakes, with regions such as Japan,Indonesia , New Zealand andCalifornia being particularly prone to seismic tremors.Subduction alonggeologic fault s surrounding the Pacific gave rise toisland arc s such asJapan and theAleutian Islands . It has also produced the high mountain ranges surrounding much of the ocean's rim, notably theRocky Mountains , theAndes (Cordillera de la Costa ),Southern Alps ,Australian Alps ,Owen Stanley Range , the mountains of Japan and theKamchatka Peninsula .See also
