Redeemer-Seton High School

Redeemer-Seton High School

Redeemer-Seton High School is a Catholic High School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Redeemer-Seton was formed by the merger of two Catholic high schools, Redeemer High School and Seton Academy. The school provided and affordable educational option for devout Catholic working and middle class families. This high school was originally locacted in the Gentilly neighborhood in New Orleans. But after suffering extensive flood damage from Hurricane Katrina and the displacement of so many former residents in the surrounding area, the school is currently closed and faces an uncertain future. It was the second-most damaged campus in the city, after Alfred Lawless High School in the Lower 9th Ward.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans plans to sell the site of Redeemer-Seton to Holy Cross High School, although this plan has elicited strong criticism from various groups, including Redeemer-Seton alumni and former Redeemer-Seton faculty members. Holy Cross administrators plan on demolishing all buildings on the site to make way for the Holy Cross campus.

Redeemer-Seton shared the site with St. Frances Cabrini Church and St. Frances Cabrini Elementary. Parishioners in Cabrini community agreed to allow the Archdiocese to sell the combined Cabrini/Redeemer-Seton site, but architecture preservationists and some members of the Cabrini community have argued that the church is an important example of mid-twentieth century architecture and is worthy of preservation and restoration. Opponents to the preservationists argue that the church has extensive damage and is not significant enough to save. Holy Cross administrators argue that they need the entire site for the high school and cannot spare the church.
