Catholic High School of Pointe Coupee is a Catholic Interparochial school in New Roads, Louisiana. It was founded in 1904 by the Sisters of St. Joseph who were commissioned to bring Catholic education to Pointe Coupee Parish.

History

Catholic of Pointe Coupee has been affiliated with the Sisters of St. Joseph since its conception. The school has been housed in several different buildings over its lifetime, beginning in a small four-room cottage on St. Mary Street, then moving up to a slightly larger building which would be destroyed by fire in 1929. Then the school moved into a large wood framed building donated by the Richey Family. The School/convent remained in that building until the early 1960s when a modern facility was completed on Fourth Street which houses the school to this day. The School is currently host to many students from destroyed Catholic schools in the New Orleans Area, including Redeemer Seton High, Archbishop Hannan High School, and St. Augustine High School. However, most have left and returned to their original communities and schools.

Faculty

The Faculty was until the late 1970s made up almost completely of Priests and Religious Sisters. But due to a shortage of clergy, there are currently no Priests or Sisters working at Catholic High of Pointe Coupee. Perhaps CHS's most known faculty member, Sister Anne Constance Livaudais, was a famed artist throughout the Baton Rouge Area. She remained an active part of the School and parish until her death in 1986 at the age of 84. It was announced in early 2007 that Mrs. Marsha Langlois would be retiring from her position as principal at the end of the '06-'07 school year. Her successor was announced as Dr. Glen Bowman in early July, 2007.

tudent body

The student body reflects the diversity of the region. Over half of the students come from small farming communities that dot the landscape around New Roads.

Athletics

The school, despite its 1A status, offers a number of sports and after school programs, including football, soccer, power lifting, baseball, softball, basketball, cross-country, track, and dance. In 2006, the volleyball team made it to the playoffs. In 1978, the school's football team won the state championship [ [http://winnfieldtigerfootball.com/id115.html Louisiana High School Football Championships ] ] . In the 2006 season, the football team finished fourth in the state. Both the girls and boys power lifting team took home state championships in 2007. The new school colors have recently been changed to silver, green, and white.
