The municipality is located in Northern Finland just south-west of the city of Oulu. The municipality has a population of 9,615 (31 January 2011)[2] and covers an area of 211.22 square kilometres (81.55 sq mi) of which 127.86 km2 (49.37 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 115.34 inhabitants per square kilometre (298.7 /sq mi). The municipality was founded in 1882.
Oulu Airport is located in Oulunsalo.
Oulunsalo is one of the fastest growing areas in Finland among the other municipalities around Oulu.
The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The municipality has previously also been known as Uleåsalo in Swedish documents, but is today referred to as Oulunsalo also in Swedish.[6]
