Namibian mark

Namibian mark

The Mark, like the Kalahar, was an unadopted Namibian currency unit that was intended to replace the South African rand. Pattern coins inscribed Essai and Probe were struck to test the designs. Some of the reasons why the pattern coins were rejected includes the following;

The coins depicts the Coat-of-Arms of South West Africa instead of the Namibian Coat-of-Arms.

The currency unit 'Mark' was rejected, because of the very strong anti-German sentiments that were expressed, especially by the Herero people.

In the end,the Namibian dollar was chosen,& was issued as from 1993.It circulates along with the rand at a ratio of 1 Namibian dollar being equal to 1 rand.
