Moses WintersMalcolm Winters is a fictional character on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, portrayed by actor Shemar Moore from May 1994 to February 14, 2002 and from November 1, 2004 to September 1, 2005. From December 29, 2009 to October 17, 2011, the character had been portrayed by former Family Matters actor Darius McCrary.[1]
Character's background
Malcolm arrives in Genoa City in 1994, determined to get to know his estranged half-brother, Neil (Kristoff St. John). Neil, at first, wants nothing to do with his rebellious younger brother, but eventually decides to give him a second chance. With the help of Blade Bladeson (Michael Tylo), Malcolm becomes Genoa City's most prominent photographer.
He soon meets Drucilla Barber (Victoria Rowell) and is instantly taken with her, but nothing becomes of the relationship and she marries Neil. Malcolm and Drucilla long for one another and have sex. However, Drucilla has taken a good dose of cold medication, thus mistaking Malcolm for Neil. Drucilla calls out for Neil, which makes Malcolm realize her advances are not intended for him. The following morning Malcolm realizes what a mistake he has made and confides in Dru's sister, Olivia (Tonya Lee Williams).
Nine months later, Drucilla gives birth to a daughter, Lily. Having convinced herself that Neil is Lily's father, Dru forgives Malcolm and Olivia soon fixes him up with her hospital colleague, Keesha Monroe (Wanda Acuna/Jennifer Gatti). They fall in love and marry just before Keesha dies of AIDS.
Malcolm then develops a relationship with recently-widowed Olivia and grows very attached to her son Nate (Bryant Jones). Malcolm and Olivia marry in 1997. One year later, Malcolm's ex-girlfriend Callie Rogers (Michelle Thomas/Siena Goines) arrives in town and Olivia becomes jealous that Malcolm is spending so much time with her. Olivia's insecurity ultimately destroys her marriage to Malcolm and he rebounds back to Callie. The two become engaged but Callie soon breaks it off and leaves town. In the meantime, Malcolm continues his close relationship with his former stepson Nate (who views Malcolm as his father).
Malcolm and Neil soon find themselves fighting over a woman: attorney Alex Perez (Alexia Robinson). Malcolm and Alex fall in love and become engaged, though she is also developing feelings for Neil. Malcolm catches them together and leaves. While Malcolm driving over a bridge in Kenya, the bridge collapses and Malcolm is presumed dead.
He returns three years later resenting Neil, believing Neil did not do enough to rescue him in Kenya. Eventually the two bury the hatchet. Malcolm then demands that Dru take a paternity test to determine once and for all if he is Lily's (Christel Khalil) biological father. When Malcolm is proven to be Lily's father, he and Dru decide to keep it a secret and he leaves town. While Malcolm is gone, Lily and Neil discover the truth about her paternity, but are unable to contact him.
In December 2009, Malcolm returns to Genoa City while secretly working undercover as a corporate spy for Tucker McCall (Stephen Nichols). He learns that Lily has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and attempts to support her while clashing with Neil. However, the two eventually put aside their differences and reconnect as brothers. Malcolm takes a job as a photographer at Restless Style magazine and hires his adopted nephew, Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) as his assistant. In July 2010 months after Malcolm mentioned he was engaged, his fiancée Sofia Dupre (Julia Pace Mitchell) arrives in town. She works for Tucker McCall and has a business clash with Neil. In April 2011, Malcolm and Sofia are married, despite the fact that she had a one-night stand with Neil weeks earlier.
Sofia is later found out to be pregnant, though the paternity of the baby is left undetermined. Although she was originally due in mid-November 2011, Sofia gave birth to a boy named Moses, after her father, on October 11, 2011. On October 14, it is revealed that Neil is Moses's father. Devastated, Malcolm must make a decision about his future with Moses. On October 17, Malcolm visits Sofia in the hospital and asks her to sign divorce papers and tells her that he will be moving away. Angry, Sofia signs them. He then says goodbye to Sofia and Neil and then goes to say goodbye to Phyllis Summers. He then leaves to catch his plane.
