Ronald Canestrari

Ronald Canestrari (born May 22, 1943) is an American politician. He represents District 106 in the State Assembly of the state of New York, which includes part of Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties; it includes sections of the cities of Albany and Troy and all of the cities of Cohoes and Rensselaer.

First elected to the Assembly in 1988, Canestrari currently serves as the Chairman of the Higher Education Committee as well as a member of standing committees on Banks, Labor, Local Governments, Rules, Ways and Means. In 2007, he became Majority Leader of the State Assembly.

Prior to his service in the New York State Assembly, Canestrari was mayor of the city of Cohoes, New York.

Canestrari is a graduate of the Christian Brothers Academy, Fordham College, and the Fordham University School of Law. He is an attorney and a member of the New York State Bar Association.

While long opposed to gay marriage, Canestrari revised his position in 2007 and now supports legalizing it in New York.
