The station is located between the
Burwood Highway and Railway Avenue, with station access from anunderpass which connects the platforms to both Burwood Highway and Railway Avenue.The station's
island platform has a large brick building with an enclosed waiting room, a ticket office and toilets. A largeMetcard machine is located inside the waiting room, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. Stabling sidings are located on both sides of the station.Upper Ferntree Gully contains a signal panel, installed in 1964 that controls the single track line between Ferntree Gully and Belgrave.
The station also monitors, via
closed circuit television , all stations from Heathmont to Belgrave and answers emergency calls from those stations.History
Upper Ferntree Gully station opened on
December 4 1889 . From December 1900 it was the break of gauge station between the broad-gauge used through most of Victoria, and the narrow-gauge Gembrook line (now thePuffing Billy Railway ), one of thenarrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways .The narrow gauge line as far as Belgrave was later rebuilt as a broad-gauge electrified line.In February 1972 the station name was subtly altered to "Upper Fern Tree Gully" [Victorian Railways Weekly Notice No. 9 of 1972.] , although in more recent times most references have reverted to the original name.
The station was upgraded to Premium Station status on
