CERE India

CERE India (Centre for Environmental Research and Education) is a Mumbai-based non-profit organisation promoting innovative texts that encourage environmental education in schools. As of September 2006, it has published an 18-book series of English-language readers, entitled "A Wisdom of Words" meant for students studying in primary and middle schools in India (roughly from age 5 or 6 till age 13).

Teaching the young

According to the organisation, the aim of the series is "to develop a generation of sensitive, creative, thinking and environmentally-sensitive young adults by teaching analytical and appreciation skills besides grammar and comprehension skills."

Questions and exercises at the end of each story or poem in each reader and workbook are designed "to foster analytical thinking and help children to form and express ideas and opinions more effectively." Exercises also attempt to "reinforce language skills such as composition, letter writing, creative writing, reference, comprehension and basic grammar skills in the context of the lesson in the reader."

Authors of this reader series have been part of the Indian educational system and involved with prominent schools, including J. B. Petit High School for Girls (Mumbai), Sishya (Chennai), Convent of Jesus and Mary (Delhi) and Tara Hall (Shimla).

Currently, these texts are being implemented in a number of prominent schools in India, including Rishi Valley School (Chittoor), The School run by the Krishnamurthy Foundation India (Chennai), J.B. High School for Girls (Mumbai), Bombay International School (Mumbai), Ramniranjan Podar Senior Secondary School (Mumbai), Hiranandani School (Mumbai), Shishuvan (Mumbai), Bethany High School (Bangalore), Greenwoods High (Bangalore), Sreenidhi (Hyderabad), buildingBlocks (Delhi, NCR).
