Sutton was born in Hamilton but spent a good part of his youth playing soccer in
Bethel, Connecticut , where his father was transferred as part of his employment. Sutton warmed up to his Canadian roots through six years with USL'sMontreal Impact , four of them as a USL All-Star and, from 2005 on, with the national team. Sutton attendedSt. Lawrence University .Sutton's pro career started in 1999 with the Chicago Fire of
Major League Soccer and spent time as a backup with theMetroStars and with theCincinnati Riverhawks .In the 2004-2005 season
English Premier League season he had a trial withBolton Wanderers and Fulham. On29 November 2006 , it was announced that Sutton would return to MLS, having been allocated to the newly-formedToronto FC for the 2007 season. Sutton was the team's starting goalkeeper until he received a head concussion duringCONCACAF Gold Cup training with Canada in June. Symptoms kept recurring and he did not make his return until the 2008 season. Sutton made his Canadian national team debut on
January 18 ,2004 againstBarbados . He was invited to the men's World Cup team development camp in July 2004 against Hearts and helped his side to a 1-1 draw. Sutton earned his second senior cap and shutout againstNorthern Ireland in February, 2005 in a 1-0 win. OnJanuary 18 of that year, he was called up to the national team roster once again.
