Lucas Lorenzo "Lucky" Spencer Jr. is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera, "General Hospital". He is the son of legendary supercouple Luke and Laura Spencer. The role was originated by Jonathan Jackson in 1993, he portrayed the character until 1999. Lucky was next played by Jacob Young from 2000 - 2003. Greg Vaughan stepped into the role in 2003, after Young's departure, and has played Lucky since.

Early years

Lucky Spencer is the oldest child of the extremely popular supercouple Luke and Laura Spencer. He was born during their run away from Port Charles in 1984 in Texas. During the first ten years of his life, Lucky and his parents were on the run from Frank Smith, Luke's former boss turned enemy. Eventually, in Canada, Smith started to catch up to the Spencers. Luke and Laura sent Lucky to Port Charles, where he was taken in and hidden by his Aunt Ruby at Kelly's Diner.

Eventually, Smith's men found Lucky in Port Charles. He was taken to the city's catacombs by his new friend Sly Eckert. When Sly's father, Bill, was killed by Frank's men (he was a very close lookalike to Luke), his parents found out where Lucky was. Later on, Lucky followed his father to a meeting with a henchman, when he was shot. He made a full recovery.

Eventually, the Spencers made their permanent home in Port Charles, where Lucky thrived. His younger sister Lulu was born. However, his world came crashing down when he found out that his mother had had an affair with Stavros Cassadine while she was held captive by the Cassadine's before he was born. She had given birth to a son Nikolas Cassadine, the bone marrow donor to keeping Lulu alive as a toddler. Lucky hated Nikolas as he competed for the love and attention of Laura. They also had a rivalry over Sarah Webber, whom Lucky had a crush on and who liked Nikolas more than Lucky.

Lucky and Liz

One night, Lucky found Sarah's younger sister Elizabeth Webber in the park. She was badly bruised and her dress was ripped. Lucky called his aunt, Bobbie Spencer to help him take care of Elizabeth. She told the two that she had been raped by an unknown man. Lucky felt the need to protect Elizabeth, and together they began to investigate her rapist. Elizabeth would serve as a source of comfort when Lucky's childhood was shattered again.

During a fight with Lucky, Nikolas told his younger brother that Luke had raped Laura before they were married. Lucky felt that Nikolas was just lying to get him angry, but still wanted the truth from his parents. He confronted Luke about it. Luke told Lucky that it was indeed the truth and that he had raped Laura on the floor of the Campus Disco years before. Lucky couldn't believe what he was hearing. He was disgusted with what his father did and that his mother had lived with her rapist for all these years. He decided to move out, and nothing Luke or Laura said to him would change his mind. He rented a room above Jason Morgan's bike shop in exchange for helping around the shop. Through the ordeal, Elizabeth was by Lucky's side. The two fell in love, as each helped the other get through their problems.

As the relationship between Lucky and Elizabeth progressed, Lucky began to develop himself into a very thoughtful, charming, caring, talented, quirky, and altogether remarkable young man. One prepossessing an uncanny instinct for understanding deep subjects that even some adults had noted trouble with. And Elizabeth began to grow as well, as they each encouraged the other to follow their dreams and their talents. Lucky in music, and Elizabeth in painting. Elizabeth even opened up her own studio for a time, and Lucky became fond of an old abandoned boxcar that he not only slept in occasionally, but that he and Liz also shared dates together at.

Eventually, Elizabeth helped Lucky realize that his parents weren't perfect and he should forgive them. He did, but still wanted to live on his own. Lucky and Elizabeth started to think about their future together. After Ruby eventually died, Lucky, Elizabeth, Nikolas and Emily shared one very special evening together at Kelly's. One filled with laughs, friendship, and contemplation as Lucky managed to say goodbye to his parents with plans to move with Elizabeth to Manhattan. That night would truly prove to be the last time Lucky and Elizabeth would be at their happiest. Their thoughts for the future were abruptly cut short when a fire broke out in Jason's shop much later that very night after the four friends had earlier met at Kelly's. A dead body was recovered in Lucky's room, complete with the necklace that Lucky had given to Elizabeth. It led everyone to believe that Lucky had died in the fire. The entire town, the Spencers, and Elizabeth deeply grieved the loss of Lucky.

Back from the dead

Even though most people believed that Lucky had died in the fire, he had secretly been kept alive. Cesar Faison, acting on orders from Helena Cassadine, kept Lucky captive. Before he died in a boat explosion, Faison let it out to Luke that Lucky was alive. A year after Lucky seemed to have died, Luke began to suspect that he might be alive.

Luke investigated Faison's claims and found clues that connected the fire and captivity to Helena. The clues led Luke and Laura down the moments of their past: the Haunted Star, Ice Princess Island and Texas. Finally, they went to Canada and the Triple L Diner where the three had been living before Luke and Laura sent Lucky to Port Charles years before.

As a teenager, Lucky's trust in his parents was further damaged when he learned that his father had raped his mother before their marriage. His girlfriend Elizabeth Webber was also raped, but Lucky was supportive of her in its aftermath. They ended their relationship for a time but ultimately reunited and married.

Lucky joined the Port Charles Police Force, much to the dismay of his father Luke. In the police force he met one of his best friends Jesse Beaudry. Lucky almost quit being a cop when Jesse was shot and killed on the job. This devastated him.

Pills

After Lucky began taking pain killers after being injured on the job, he began battling an addiction. Maxie Jones, who bonded with Lucky after Jesse's death, has been supplying him with hydrocodone, has slept with him multiple times, and is trying (successfully) to break up his marriage to Elizabeth, who, after learning of his affair and the multiple times he lied to her, has left him and was living with her adopted grandmother, Audrey Hardy. When Lucky learned that Elizabeth was pregnant, he assumed that the baby is his and this prompted him to go into rehab, though Elizabeth still insists that the relationship is over.

After Lucky accepted there was no hope for them, he told her that he would be out of her life forever and wished her well. Elizabeth then decided she would accept Lucky's previous marriage proposal. They moved into the Spencer home and Lucky was excited about the baby he and Elizabeth had on the way. He wanted a girl he could name Laura, after his mother. Elizabeth gave birth to a baby boy, whom she named Jacob Martin Spencer. Elizabeth chose Jake's first and middle initials after Jason Morgan, Jake's true father.

Jake's kidnapping

Lucky's stepson Jake was kidnapped by a woman named Maureen Harper who wanted a second chance after her baby girl died in a fire. Jason, the baby's real father, saved the little boy and brought him home to Elizabeth and Lucky. When Jason brought the little boy back to his mother and family, Lucky had him arrested because he had skipped bail while going after the baby.

While Elizabeth was testifing at Jason's murder trial, she revealed that she and Jason slept together. Lucky was outraged and their marriage has been falling apart. Elizabeth repeatedly throughout this second marriage had been emotionally unfaithful. Despite his requests that Elizabeth be truthful with him, she continued to lie to him about her feelings for Jason and Jake's paternity. He asked her, pointblank, if Jake was his son, and she assured him he was. She then proceeded to distance herself from Lucky, despite his efforts to keep the marriage going if only for the kids sake. He has become good friends with Sam McCall, but little does he know that Sam is out to ruin his family, using him to do it. Elizabeth and Lucky decided to divorce. Elizabeth and the boy's moved out of the Spencer house and to her Grandmother's, Audrey hardy's house. Soon after they left, Lucky went over to Sam's and had sex.

Lucky and Liz ended up getting a very messy second divorce. Elizabeth wanted sole custody of the boys and Lucky have visitation. Lucky did not like this arrangement so he hired Alexis Davis while Liz hired Diane Miller. Lucky threatened to take sole custody of Jake and Cameron.

Alexis told Lucky that he has no legal right to Cameron because he never adopted him. And to cap matters, Lucky was completely unaware that Jake was not his biological son either. Lucky decided to fie for sole custody of Jake as payback to Jason and Elizabeth. He was subsequently denied custody of Jake and also lost all visitation. Elizabeth and Lucky later decided that she would have primary custody and Lucky would have unlimited visitation.

Lucky and Sam

Sam McCall and Lucky agreed to be friends and lovers while Lucky and Elizabeth await their final divorce proceedings. On the night of October 31, 2007 at Nikolas' Black and White Ball, Sam got into it with Elizabeth about Elizabeth's divorce. Elizabeth slapped Sam after hearing a cutting comment about her failed marriage. As Liz was walking away, Sam caught her by the arm and hit her. The moment was then degraded with a cliché hair-tugging match that Lucky had to break up.

Lucky found out the truth about baby Jake's true parentage, and began to despise Jason and Elizabeth. Sam tried comforting Lucky through the rest of the night. Sam receives a scare after her friend, Maxie Jones' sister, Georgie is murdered by the Text Message Killer. Two days later Sam believes that she will be the next victim after she receives a threatening text message. She had planned to use herself as bait to lure out the killer, but is persuaded not to by Lucky. Recently Sam got angry and told Carly that Jake is Jason's son in an attempt to seek revenge on Elizabeth and Carly.

Sam and Lucky are trying to move past the pain of their past relationships and move on, together. Sam sometimes becomes jealous of Elizabeth again when she sees Lucky's concern for her. She realizes that nothing will ever make Lucky and Elizabeth hate each other for good, but, she has moved past it.

After walking by the docks Sam, witnesses Alexis being attacked by the Text Message Killer and scares him off, only for them both to receive messages that say Sam will watch Alexis die.

Elizabeth came to the Spencer house and saw Sam with Jake. Elizabeth freaked out and told Sam to stay away from her kids. Sam began to taunt Elizabeth by saying that she will be a family with Lucky, Cam, and Jake and Elizabeth will never be a family with Jason, Cam, and Jake. Lucky came in and took Elizabeth back to the hospital where he later overheard Sam and Liz fighting again. Lucky told Elizabeth to tell him the truth about Sam, and she told him about how Sam witnessed Jake's kidnapping and hired thugs to go after Elizabeth and her sons. A visibly hurt Lucky stormed out and later beat up a drug dealer, contemplating whether to take the pills, only to throw them into the ocean. Later when he returned home, Lucky angrily broke up with a distraught Sam, shooing her out of his home (vowing that he would help Jason and Elizabeth do all they could to keep Sam away from Jake).

At the docks alone after Lucky broke up with her, Sam gets a text from the killer, she frantically calls Lucky who does not believe her. The killer attacks and their struggle winds up in the street where Sam goes to run away from the danger, but is ironically hit by a car who later turned out to be Monica.

Even though there has been lots of hurt, Lucky and Sam have decided to try out their relationship again.

On June 2008, Lucky and Sam embarked on a Mexican adventure to search for Luke. They failed to find him but were able to successfully deliver the jewels to him. While in Mexico, both got into separate bar fights. Lucky defended Sam from a guy who made a pass at her while Sam fought a certain Sharon for flirting with Lucky. Sharon was a woman whose fiance was conned by Sam in the past. Lucky then punched the police officer who implied that he wouldn't mind having Sam in jail for a few weeks. This landed both of them in jail. There, they tried to come up with a plan to escape but they find out that the jail guard is Sam's old friend so they are set free.

Lucky and Sam's trip to Mexico may have been meant to be an adventure but it also brought them closer. During the trip, Lucky and Sam saw another side to each other that they never did before. Sam said that she enjoyed seeing Lucky's Spencer traits and Lucky loved how Sam was more relaxed and happy in the trip. He wanted to know how he could continue making her happy. To this, Sam admitted that she knew he had many other obligations and that she understood that. Lucky told her that no matter what happened, he wanted her in his life. Once they returned to Port Charles, they solidified their desire to continually open their hearts to each other. They are both afraid of getting hurt but are willing to trust each other in order to find happiness.

Currently, Sam and Lucky are involved in an undercover investigation to find out who supplies fake drugs to hospitals and clinics. Lucky is not pleased with her decision but trusts her enough to go along with it. In order for Sam to get in the business, they are pretending to be broken up but are meeting up secretly to support each other as much as possible through their ups and downs.

The Black and White Ball

Lucky continued to pursue Sam, in spite of the many warnings that he was truly playing with fire and was likely to get burned. At the Black and White Ball at Wyndemere, Lucky and Nikolas were in one of the rooms together when the psychopathic Anthony Zacchara arrived to attempt the murder of Lulu. Nikolas claims to have suffered a mental blackout, one of many he'd been suffering as of late, and Lucky is reported as missing along with several other guests of the party because Lucky was no longer in the room with Nikolas when he came to himself again. Lucky's whereabouts were unknown for awhile, but he eventually turned up in one piece. While in the stables at Wyndemere, Jason tells Lucky that Jake is not his son. Out of anger and hurt, Lucky punches Jason in the face and Jason lets him. He flees and Sam goes after him.

Lucky has continued to be Jake's father to keep him safe.
