Carly Corinthos Jacks (born Caroline Leigh Benson, previously Quartermaine, Corinthos and Alcazar) is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera, "General Hospital". The role was originated in 1996 by Sarah Brown, who received three Emmy Awards for her portrayal during her run. Tamara Braun stepped into the part in 2001 when Brown left the show. Character creation

In 1999, writer Patrick Mulcahey noted that the character of Carly Benson had been somewhat of a work in progress at first:

Fictional character history

Arrival in Port Charles

Longrunning heroine Bobbie Spencer's past as a teen prostitute had long been established when a young woman named Carly Roberts comes to Port Charles in 1996 with the single intent to ruin Bobbie's life. Carly is Bobbie's biological daughter, given up for adoption by the teen when she was unable to care for the child herself; to conceal her identity, she assumes the name of her best friend, Charlotte "Carly" Roberts, who had died in a car accident when they were teenagers. Carly's real name was Caroline Leigh Benson. As revenge for being "abandoned," Carly seduces Bobbie's husband Dr. Tony Jones. Carly begins a friendship with Jason Morgan, and after fighting with Tony, she sleeps with a drunk A.J. Quartermaine, Jason's brother. She discovers she is pregnant, and asks Jason to claim to be the father of her child. The baby is later named Michael Morgan, after Jason's mob boss Michael "Sonny" Corinthos.

Carly reveals to Bobbie that she is really Caroline Benson, the daughter Bobbie had put up for adoption. Tony kidnaps Michael to protect him from Jason and Sonny's mob lifestyle, and when Tony is not sent to jail for the crime, Carly shoots him and is sent to a mental institution. Jason secures her release, and Carly and Michael move in with Jason and his girlfriend Robin Scorpio. Robin tells A.J. that he is Michael's real father; A.J. blackmails Carly into moving into the Quartermaine mansion, with threats to have her institutionalized again. A.J. and Carly wed, though she plots a future with Jason. After she misreads a tender moment between Jason and Elizabeth Webber, Carly sleeps with Sonny and becomes pregnant with his baby.

onny and Carly

Sonny is able to force A.J to sign over his rights to Michael, and Carly moves in with Sonny. Carly miscarries after a fight with A.J.; she marries Sonny so she will not be forced to testify against him about a crime she witnesses him committing. The two soon bond over the loss of their unborn baby, and renew their wedding vows out of love. Their marriage is troubled, and it deteriorates to the point that Sonny sleeps with his attorney, Alexis Davis — and gets her pregnant. Alexis pretends her former fiancé Ned Ashton is the father of her baby Kristina Davis, but after giving birth, Alexis eventually tells Carly that Sonny is the father.

Sonny's half-brother, Ric Lansing, drugs Carly and tricks her into believing they had sex. Soon after, Carly learns she is pregnant, but Sonny is revealed to be the father. Ric marries Elizabeth, who is pregnant with his child, but the baby is lost after she has a fight with Sonny. Ric kidnaps Carly, and keeps her in a panic room at his house, planning on faking an adoption. Elizabeth goes into shock upon finding her, and Lorenzo Alcazar is able to kidnap Carly, with whom he shares a mutual attraction. Sonny finds Alcazar helping Carly give birth and shoots him, but the bullet goes through Alcazar and hits Carly as her son Morgan is being born. Carly goes into a coma, and awakes to find herself desiring a life with Alcazar, though she soon regains a connection with Sonny and their family.

Divorce and later marriages

Carly reveals to Sonny that Kristina is his daughter, but their marriage ends because she had held on to the secret for so long. Carly and Sonny divorce, and she marries Alcazar out of revenge against Sonny, though the marriage is short-lived due to her ties with Sonny. Carly also finds out that FBI agent Reese Marshall is her supposedly dead best friend, Charlotte. Quartermaine, Her first husband. This leads Carly to suffer a nervous breakdown, and she is once again committed to a mental hospital.

After her release, Carly begins to rebuild her life starting with a new job at the Metro Court Hotel. During an encephalitis outbreak, Carly's friend (and Sonny's sister) Courtney Matthews dies soon after giving birth to a baby boy named John, and Carly offers to raise this baby with Courtney's husband, Jax Jacks. However, Robin reveals that John's real father is Nikolas Cassadine at his christening, who takes custody. Her father was killed defending her from Manny Ruiz, a homocidal murderer.

Carly and Jax become engaged, but Carly marries Sonny to save herself from testifying against him. However, she decides to marry Jax after she gets a divorce from Sonny.

Michael's Shooting

Carly struggles with fertility issues, but is able to become pregnant with Jax's daughter. Due to the violence facing his family, Michael purchases a gun, and accidentally shoots Kate Howard, Sonny's Fiancee. Michael runs away, and when Carly retrieves him the two are caught in a warehouse explosion and she miscarries the baby. Sonny tries to show Michael a life without mob violence, but Michael is shot by Ian Devlin in a plan orchestrated by Claudia Zacchara and her brother, Johnny. Carly learns Michael is in a permanent coma, and decides to care for him at home but later puts him into a long-term care facility outside of town. [ [http://www.soaps.com/generalhospital/update/4172/Little_Victim__Big_Fallout "General Hospital" Daily Updates: "Little Victim, Big Fallout." - Soaps.com] ] After installing Michael at the facility in Manhattan, she and Sonny have sex in the limo, and Carly convinces him to give up parental rights to Morgan.

Marriage Troubles

Meanwhile, Jax continues to quell his doubts about their relationship, despite active interference from Kate. Carly learns about Jax and Kate's one-night-stand, but when Jax and Kate learn of the night Sonny and Carly shared together, Jax files for divorce. Soon after, Jason and Carly attend Sonny and Kate's wedding, carrying a secret agenda. Carly, Maxie, Spinelli and Jason find out from Olivia that Kate Howard is actually Constanza Louise Falconeri. As the wedding begins, Kate comes down the aisle as Carly gives a classic glare. As she steps up to the podium, she is shot in the chest by a sniper in the choir loft. Everyone rushes out of the church, but Mike Corbin quickly comes and gets Carly. She had a year of medical school years back, but flunked out. But Carly was "all they had." She helps to stop Kate's bleeding, and when she is rushed to the hospital, Carly and Jax are questioned by Mac. They return home, and Jax tells Carly that although they're seperated, he wants her to be safe. He feels that Jason's gaurds aren't enough, so he persuades her to move into a huge penthouse at the Metro Court. They suffer an awkward moment when Jax finds out that he and Carly are going to the same Montreal meeting. She is flying commercial, and he is taking the jet. She refuses to go with him, and drives off to the airport. After the meeting, Carly and Jax return, sepratley, and try to keep going. Shortly after another awkward run-in with Jax, Carly goes to see Jason. She busts in just as Max is playing over Maximus. To help him, she pretends to be Max's girlfriend; his "little lady."
