Simmonds' test

Simmonds' test

Simmonds' test (also called the Thompson test or Simmonds-Thompson test) is used in lower limb examination to test for the rupture of the achilles tendon.cite journal |author=Thompson T |title=A test for rupture of the tendo achillis |journal=Acta Orthop Scand |volume=32 |issue= |pages=461–5 |year=1962 |pmid=13981206] cite journal |author=Thompson T, Doherty J |title=Spontaneous rupture of tendon of Achilles: a new clinical diagnostic test |journal=J Trauma |volume=2 |issue= |pages=126–9 |year=1962 |pmid=13920945] The patient lies face down with feet hanging off the edge of the bed. If the test is positive, there is no movement of the foot (normally plantarflexion) on squeezing the corresponding calf, signifying likely rupture of the achilles tendon.cite journal |author=Scott B, al Chalabi A |title=How the Simmonds-Thompson test works |journal=J Bone Joint Surg Br |volume=74 |issue=2 |pages=314–5 |year=1992 |url=http://www.jbjs.org.uk/cgi/reprint/74-B/2/314 |pmid=1544978]

It is named after Franklin Adin Simmonds (1911-1983), an English orthopaedic surgeon at the Rowley Bristow Hospital, Surrey.cite journal |author=Simmonds FA |title=The diagnosis of the ruptured Achilles tendon |journal=Practitioner |volume=179 |issue=1069 |pages=56–8 |year=1957 |pmid=13453094]
