- Simmonds' test
Simmonds' test (also called the Thompson test or Simmonds-Thompson test) is used in lower limb examination to test for the rupture of the achilles tendon.cite journal |author=Thompson T |title=A test for rupture of the tendo achillis |journal=Acta Orthop Scand |volume=32 |issue= |pages=461–5 |year=1962 |pmid=13981206] cite journal |author=Thompson T, Doherty J |title=Spontaneous rupture of tendon of Achilles: a new clinical diagnostic test |journal=J Trauma |volume=2 |issue= |pages=126–9 |year=1962 |pmid=13920945] The patient lies face down with feet hanging off the edge of the bed. If the test is positive, there is no movement of the foot (normally
plantarflexion ) on squeezing the corresponding calf, signifying likely rupture of the achilles tendon.cite journal |author=Scott B, al Chalabi A |title=How the Simmonds-Thompson test works |journal=J Bone Joint Surg Br |volume=74 |issue=2 |pages=314–5 |year=1992 |url=http://www.jbjs.org.uk/cgi/reprint/74-B/2/314 |pmid=1544978]It is named after
Franklin Adin Simmonds (1911-1983), an English orthopaedic surgeon at the Rowley Bristow Hospital, Surrey.cite journal |author=Simmonds FA |title=The diagnosis of the ruptured Achilles tendon |journal=Practitioner |volume=179 |issue=1069 |pages=56–8 |year=1957 |pmid=13453094]References
