- Sauro class submarine
The Nazario Sauro class are submarines operated by the Italian Navy. All boats were built by
Fincantieri inMonfalcone . There are three sub groups built in four batches:*Nazario Sauro class:
** "S518 Nazario Sauro" - completed 1980 - decommissioned (named afterNazario Sauro ),
** "S519 Carlo Fecia di Cossato" - completed 1980 - decommissioned - named after Italian World War II submarine commanderCarlo Fecia di Cossato [ [http://www.regiamarina.net/subs/people/commanders/feciadicossato/feciadicossato_us.htm- Reference] ]
** "S520 Leonardo Da Vinci" - completed 1982 - in reserve(named afterLeonardo Da Vinci )

** "S522 Salvatore Pelosi" - completed 1988 - in service - named after Italian World War II submarine commander and war heroSalvatore Pelosi
** "S523 Giuliano Prini" - completed 1989 - in service - named after Italian World War II submarine commander and war heroGiuliano Prini *Primo Longobardo class or fourth "Improved Sauro" batch:
** "S524 Primo Longobardo" - completed 1993 - in service - named after Italian World War II submarine commander and war heroPrimo Longobardo
