The Cosby Show " from1989 to1991 . Additionally, he portrayedJustus Ward on the ABCsoap opera "General Hospital " from1994 to1998 . Phillips is also a guest political commentator on "News and Notes with Ed Gordon" on mostNPR radio stations. In 2006, Phillips published an autobiography, "He Talk Like A White Boy", which had a foreword byTavis Smiley .Phillips role as Martin Kendall came about when Denise Huxtable married him in Africa, unbeknownest to her parents and family. Kendall was in the Navy, and had a young daughter named Olivia and an ex-wife named Paula. In the finale, it is learned that he and Denise are expecting a baby together.

Alpha Phi Alpha , the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans. He attended the University of the Pacific as a communications major, but later transferred to the acting conservatory atNew York University where he graduated with a BFA in Acting in 1983.Phillips is an ambassador for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. He has spoken extensively about the disease and its effect on the family.
