History
The company was founded by Roy and Estelle Kelley who opened their first hotel in 1947. The company's first hotel to carry the Outrigger name was the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, which opened in 1967. In 1986, Outrigger became the largest hotel chain in Hawaii when its room count pushed over 7,000.[1]
In 1999, Outrigger created a new brand, Ohana Hotels and Resorts to better market its more moderately priced three-star properties, while keeping the Outrigger brand for its higher-end four-star and luxury properties. Ohana is a Hawaiian word meaning "family".
Properties
There are ten Outrigger and OHANA properties in Waikiki, as well as one by the airport and the Ala Moana Hotel. There are five Outrigger hotels on Maui, nine on the Big Island and three on Kauai.
Internationally, Outrigger has two properties in Australia, three in Guam and one in Fiji with projects underway in Bali, Palau, and Phuket, Thailand.
Recent developments
The company's most recent initiative is Waikiki Beach Walk[2], a $535 million, 8-acre (32,000 m2) hotel-retail-entertainment complex, billed by the company as the largest development in the history of Waikiki, which opened in December 2006.
