The USNS Lone Jack (T-AO-161) was originally a type
T2 tanker , more specifically a T2-SE-A1. The ship was built atSun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. inChester, PA as hull number 450 and USMC number 1783 in 1944. At that time, it was the "SS Lone Jack" and was owned byCities Service Oil Co. The Lone Jack was placed in theNational Defense Reserve Fleet in 1956 and was activated later that year. It was transferred to the MSTS in 1957.From then, the ship was operated under General Agency Agreement by
Marine Transport Lines, Inc. , ofNew York City . From January to October 1957 she carried oil shipments from ports in the Persian Gulf to American bases in Japan and the western Pacific. In October 1957, the Lone Jack entered theMaritime Reserve Fleet . In 1966, the ship was transferred to the Army for use as a floating power station along the coast ofSouth Vietnam .References
