Richmond Annex, Richmond, California

Richmond Annex, Richmond, California

Richmond Annex or The Annex is a neighborhood in southeastern Richmond, California. It is mostly residential and located between Interstate 80 and El Cerrito to the east, the San Francisco Bay to the west, Albany to the south, and Pullman to the north.

Recently the residents have been debating the development of the old UC Berkeley Field station, which is proposed to have highrise office buildings and thousands of new housing units since they believe the added traffic and blockage of bay views will detract from their neighborhood quality of life.

The residents have also rallied successfully for a cell phone tower to not be built, had major input on the Carlson boulevard Interstate 80 overpass mural, and kept Fairmont elementary school in neighboring El Cerrito from being closed. Kohl's

There is currently a controversial proposal to add a 98,000 sq. ft. (9,100 m²) Kohl's department store on a site between the Costco Store and the Hoffman Marsh in the Point Isabel area of the neighborhood [http://www.contracostatimes.com/search/ci_9431846?IADID=Search-www.contracostatimes.com-www.contracostatimes.com New Kohl's store proposed for Richmond] , by Katherine Tam, Contra Costa Times, May 30, 2008, access date August 8, 2008] Many residents are worried about potential negative effects on increased nighttime lighting that will make endangered birds more susceptible to predators and increased traffic along Central Avenue. The Richmond Annex Neighborhood Council has officially opposed the project. If built it would add 138 mostly part-time jobs and $250,000 to 350,000 dollars in annual revenues for the city of Richmond. The project would also add a 4-5,000 sq. ft. (372-465 m²) commercial space for a restaurant or second retailer detached from the Kohl's; however some residents believe it should be adjacent to the 2-story Kohl's building to minimize visual impact.
