Dr. John Grey is a fictional character in the Marvel Universe and the father of Jean Grey.

Fictional character biography

John Grey is the father of founding X-Men member, Jean Grey. John was employed as a history professor at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. During the Inferno storyline, John was temporarily transformed into a demon by the Goblyn Queen, a clone of their daughter, Jean.

After the death of her daughter, Sara Grey-Bailey, and possibly her husband Paul, Dr. Grey and his wife Elaine took care of their grandchildren, Gailyn and Joey. When occurred, John was aided by Nate Grey, who ironically is an alternate version of his grandson, Nathan Summers, in saving his grandchildren, Joey & Gailyn.

End of Grey

He was the first of the Greys killed by the Shi'ar Death Commandos ["Uncanny X-Men" #468] . He has been noted as being the carrier of the X-Gene that has granted Jean and the Bailey children their mutant powers.

Alternate versions

Ultimate John Grey

In the Ultimate Marvel universe, Professor Grey, while working in his greenhouse, is confronted by Wasp about his daughter's whereabouts ["Ultimate War" #2] . He tells her that he knew about Magneto being alive, and that the X-Men deliberately told him nothing about their safehouses so that no telepath could read the information from his mind. He reveals to Wasp that due to growing up with a mutant, he recognizes the feelings of being telepathically scanned. As such, he knows Wasp brought along S.H.I.E.L.D. telepaths. Like his mainstream counterpart, he is accepting of his daughter being a mutant.
