Cremorne railway station, Melbourne

Cremorne railway station, Melbourne

Cremorne railway station was an early inner suburban station in the Melbourne, Australia. It was located in the suburb of Richmond, on the then Windsor line (now the Sandringham line) between Richmond and South Yarra stations, on the Melbourne side of the Yarra River bridge and just north of Balmain Street. The station was used by crowds visiting the Cremorne Gardens, a 19th century amusement park on the banks of the Yarra. Cremorne opened on 12 December, 1859 and closed barely over a year later, on 22 December, 1860. J.B. Cooper (1924, p. 181) claims that the "gardens (had) dancing, entertainments and open air shows... (&) were frequented by fast men and women having money to burn". One can only wonder if this harsh judgement was made on the basis of glimpses of women's ankles under hoops of crinoline or perhaps men wearing suede shoes...
