The stories in the collection both postulate futures in which Earth has reverted to feudalism, in one instance by the dictate of alien invaders and in the other as a result of the accumulation of excessive power by corporations.

- "The Stolen Dormouse"
Reception
Astounding reviewer P. Schuyler Miller praised the book for the "sheer entertainment" it provided, noting that de Camp uses his "detailed knowledge of history" to depict "hypothetical future societies which ape those of the past."[8]
