elementary school inVancouver, British Columbia part ofSchool District 39 Vancouver .History
Hastings School was built on its present site in 1908. The original wooden building was replaced with the present masonry structure and several additions have been added since that time. The present school building underwent a total renovation that was completed in 1997. A new addition of six classrooms on the north side of the school will be ready for occupancy by September, 2003. Hastings is a large, complex, inner city project school with strong parent support and involvement. Apart from having both English and French Immersion programs, Hastings is also a community school with a diverse population of ESL learners, and partnerships with many other community agencies. Hastings has 670 students in Kindergarten to Grade Seven - 230 in French Immersion and 440 in English. Its annex, Tillicum Elementary Community School, is five blocks away and has 210 students in Kindergarten to Grade Four. The major ethnic groups in the school are of Chinese, Vietnamese, Central American Spanish, European and First Nations descent.
Hastings School has a strong academic focus. Literacy continues as a focus with Reading, Mathematics and Social Studies.Hastings has been designated an inner city project school and receives additional support staff as a result of that designation. Hastings attempts to be a safe and caring school that places the highest priority on the needs of our students and their families.
The school has focused on a Violence Prevention/Bullyproofing program and effective behaviour strategies over the past two years. As a community school, its mandate is to serve its students, their families and the community at large.
The school administration believes that strong, supportive relationships between home and school provide the best opportunities for students. The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) has worked closely with the school to ensure that students have computer access to both local and wide area networks. Our parents' group also provides ongoing advice and support through parent-organized programs, activities and school committees.
The staff are proud of the students and aim to equip them with the skills and resourcefulness to be productive citizens in the future.
