Built in 1943, it crosses theYalu River , carryingautomobile and rail traffic. (Thepedestrians are not allowed to cross the bridge.) Thebridge is one of the few ways to enter or leave North Korea.About 100 meters downstream is the old bridge built in 1911, now called the "Broken Bridge" (断桥). It was bombed and half damaged on the Korean side during the
Korean War in 1950 and has not been reconstructed. That bridge is now a tourist attraction on the Chinese side, to learn about the Korean War and the world's largest bridges.Trains travel over the Friendship Bridge on a daily basis. The border is relatively porous, as the governments of China and North Korea have fairly good relations. Fact|date=February 2007
Chosongul script is common on many signs in Dandong.Fact|date=February 2007While it is considered one bridge, the contrast between the Chinese side and North Korean side are immense. The bridge on the Chinese side is decked with flashing
neon light s that light up at night while the North Korean side is left in the dark due to acute fuel shortage in North Korea.Fact|date=February 2007 Another view of this contrast is that the North Korean side is far from the downtown area, while the Chinese side is not far from downtown Dandong.ee also
