Branxton is a town in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. It is mostly in Cessnock City Council, but part of it is in Singleton Shire. Together with nearby Greta, it had a population of 3,805 in 2001.
Branxton is a busy service township with a medical centre, swimming school, and an art school.
History
The Branxton area was settled in the 1820s and was named after Branxton, England.
Transport
Branxton is located on the New England Highway between Maitland and Singleton. While the highway passes through the centre of the town, most through traffic will bypass the town when the F3 to Branxton link road is completed. It is presently anticipated that that road will open in 2010. Branxton is 171 kilometres north of Sydney via the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and New England Highway but the distance from Sydney will be slightly reduced when the new road is completed.
The town has an infamous welcome sign on approach by the local Lions Club stating that Branxton has 'two cemeteries and no hospital'. The sign is meant to be a deterrent to rule-breaking motorists.
Branxton is located on the Main Northern railway line and has its own railway station, which is on CityRail's Hunter line.
Wine
Branxton is at the northern end of Wine Country Drive and is the northern gateway to the world renowned Hunter Valley wine country of Pokolbin and Rothbury.
