Lilydale is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The Mayor's office for the Shire is located within Lilydale. It is 39 kilometres away from the Melbourne city centre. Lilydale represents the outermost limits of Melbourne's eastern suburbs, with the farms of the upper Yarra Valley extending to the east. The region also has public transport with a train and bus service from the Lilydale station. It is also the location of the start of the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail.

History

The Shire of Yarra Ranges was created from the Local Government Amalgamtions of 1994. Involving the former Shires of Healesville, Lillydale, Sherbrooke and Upper Yarra. The combined Shires have nine wards and representatives are elected every three years. The next Council Election will be in November 2008.

Lilydale is well known for Lillydale Lake, a recreational area where children play and learn about the wetlands environment. Surrounding the lake are modern housing estates, such as Lakeview Estate.

Lilydale has its own franchise of McDonalds and KFC. Lilydale also has shopping centres named 'The Olive Tree' and 'Stockland' as well as shops on both sides of Main Street. The Olinda Creek runs through Lilydale having its source in the nearby Dandenong Ranges and is a tributary of the Yarra River.

Lilydale Airport is located in Yering 5km north of Lilydale. There is also a campus of Swinburne University of Technology, which offers TAFE and university courses. Lilydale has three main secondary schools: Lilydale High School, Mount Lilydale Mercy College and Lilydale Heights College. Lilydale Adventist Academy is also a secondary School. Many primary schools are located in the suburb as well.

Other institutions based in Lilydale include, the Bible College of Victoria and the Australia offices for Institute in Basic Life Principles and Advanced Training Institute.

Cultural References

A popular ground covering product, used in pathways, driveways, backyards and composed of stones, is colloquially known as "Lilydale Toppings", it is unknown as to how this reference was initiated.
