Krishnapura matha

The Krishnapura Matha (Kannada, Tulu : ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಪುರ ಮಠ ) belongs to the Madhwa sect of Vaishnavism.The Krishnapura math one of the Ashta Mathas of Udupi. Ashta Mathas (Eight Monasteries) founded by Dwaitha philosphor Sri Madhwacharya of Udupi. The Krishnapura matha is currently headed by Sri Vidyasagara Thirta Swamiji. [ [http://www.hindu.com/2005/12/31/stories/2005123103630200.htm] ] The first Swami of this matha was Sri Janardhana Thirta, who was one of the direct disciples of Sri Madhvacharya.The presiding deity of the matha is Sri Kalingamardhana Krishna (Krishna on hood of serpent) The matha (written as mutt in some records and literature) has many branches all over India.

The Matha (Monastery) is known as Krishnapura Matha (Mutt). The idols of Kalingamardana krishna are worshipped here. The matha houses a Mukyaprana (Maruti) temple inside, where puja is performed everyday. The swami or pontiff looks after affairs of matha. The Krishnapura matha has number of branches all over India. Some are at Udupi, Ramanakatte (Near Manipal), Padigaru, Pejavara,Dandithirtha, Padubidri and others mostly in districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi of Karnataka and one in Prayag (Allahabad).The Krishnapura Matha owned last large tracts of land ,but lost due to enactment of the law " Tiller is the owner of Land " by then Chief minister of Karnataka state Devaraj Urs.

The matha ( monastery ) at Krishnapura, which is 3 kilometres from Surathkal town is the main matha from which the name has been derived.The present matha at Krishnapura was built by Sri Vidyamurthi Teertha who is twenty sixth pontiff in this lineage built matha ( monastery at) Krishnapura. . There is a Mukhyaprana Hanuman temple inside the matha. The structure of the building is mostly made of wood. This type of structure is rare in the age of concrete buildings nowadays.
