Born in
Detroit, Michigan , Carr was one of the greatest long sprinters of the early 1960s. Prior to bringing his athletic talents toArizona State University , Carr was a State Champion sprinter for Northwestern High School in Detroit. While competing for the Sun Devils, he won or tied for three national titles, and setworld record s in the 200 m, 220 yd (201 m) and 4 x 440 m relay.He won the 1963 NCAA title at 200 m in 20.5. The same year he ran 20.69 to tie with
Paul Drayton for the USA title. Twice that year he ran world records: an unratified 20.4 for 200 m, and a 20.3 for 220 yd (201 m) just three days later in a college three-way meet. In 1964, Carr ran even faster, hitting a world record 20.2 for 220 yd (201 m).It was at the 1964 Olympics, however, where Carr achieved his greatest fame, winning the 200 m and anchoring the winning 4 x 400 meters relay (world record 3:00.7). He was top ranked in the world in the 200 m in 1963 and 1964.
After college, Carr played
American football in the NFL for three seasons for theNew York Giants as a safety.External links
