Nowlands Gap

Nowlands Gap on the Liverpool Range, NSW

Nowlands Gap, also known as Nowlands Pass and Murrurundi Gap, is a pass over the Liverpool Range in central NSW Australia.

William Nowland discovered Nowlands Gap north of Murrurundi in 1827. His route eventually became part of the Great North Road^{[citation needed]}. Built by 3,000 convicts between 1826 and 1834 it was the first road out of the Hunter Valley^{[citation needed]}.

The pass, surrounded by high ground of over 1,200 metres, is approximately 730 metres above sea level. The New England Highway passes over the range here where there truck parking bays, and the Great Northern Railway passes under it via Ardglen Tunnel.

The Bureau of Meteorology maintains a weather station at the pass, named Murrurundi Gap station.
