Tsurugi, Tokushima

nihongo|Tsurugi|つるぎ町|-chō is a town in Mima District, Tokushima Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku in Japan. It was formed on March 1, 2005 as a result of the merger of the towns of Handa and Sadamitsu as well as the village of Ichiu. The area is 194.8 km² and the registered population, as of August 1, 2006, is 12,181. [http://www.town.tokushima-tsurugi.lg.jp/] The population density is 62.53 people per square kilometer.

Geography

The Yoshino River, Shikoku's second-longest, runs through Tsurugi.

Education

Tsurugi has two high schools, both operated by Tokushima Prefecture. The town operates four middle schools and seven elementary schools.

Transportation

The JR Shikoku Tokushima Line serves Tsurugi with two stations: Awa Handa and Sadamitsu.

Two national highways of Japan pass through the town: Routes 192 and 438.
