- USS Execute (AM-232)
USS "Execute" (AM-232) was an "Admirable"-class minesweeper built for the
U.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in thePacific Ocean .She was launched by
Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company ,Seattle, Washington ; on22 June 1944 ; sponsored by Mrs. R. J. Huff, and commissioned on15 November 1944 , Lieutenant R. E. Brenkman,USNR , in command. She was reclassified (MSF-232) on7 February 1955 .World War II Pacific Ocean operations
Following shakedown cruise she departed for
Pearl Harbor whence she escorted aconvoy toLeyte viaEniwetok ,Ulithi andKossol Roads during February 1945. On26 March , as part of the preliminary assault force for the invasion of theRyukyus , she screenedlanding craft against countless air attacksSupporting Battle of Okinawa operations
Early in April she served with the Sweep Unit in clearing the bays of Nakagusuku and
Chimu and defended vessels againstkamikaze attack. She participated in theBattle of Okinawa . During this battle she picked up 70 survivors of the USS|Mullany|DD-528 after it had been hit by a Japanese plane.She remained on sweeping duty, participating in a feint landing on
20 April to draw attention from a large-scale advance onNaha . From June through10 September she swept in theYellow Sea and in Japanese coastal waters.Post-War Decommissioning
In March 1946 "Execute" transited the
Panama Canal and on6 August 1946 was placed out of commission in reserve atOrange, Texas . She was stricken from theNavy List on1 May 1962 . Transferred to Mexico and served as "DM-03". Later renamed as either "General Manuel Gonzalez" or "General Juan N Mendez" (C-51)).References
